Every year on the second week of October artists, architects, theologians meet for a three day workshop on a beautiful island called Reichenau am Bodensee for a workshop, gathering, praying, meeting, meditations. With hundreds of visitors every year it became an established well known event in the European Christian art scene. If you are in southern Germany around October and interested in art workshops, and get to know Christian Art it is sure worth a visit. You can register online on the website GCK-Freiburg.de.

We moved to Phoenix in November 2006, driven by the urge to flee the long winters in Germany. We’d rather shovel sun than snow. In the time we started our life here it was wintertime, with temperatures in the 80s. We knew it was going to get a lot hotter here in the desert..

The past 20 years we spent all our vacations here in the US and traveled quite a bit, but down here in the desert, is the place we’d like to stay. Phoenix is a great city to live, though it is hard to get around at first. Krauts are used to stop at a red light (yes, we do stop) right in front of the light. These big intersections here are a hard thing to get used to. And I ended up many times, in the middle of the intersection, because it seems odd (thanks for not running me over), to stop at a line, where you can barely see the traffic lights.

This is our second summer here. The first summer we wanted to enjoy the sun as much as possible. This second summer, we are like our neighbors. It seems staying inside is the easier way. This has the effect though, that friends from Germany who think we fry in the sun everyday with a tan like 6 weeks vacation in Spain (yes, in Germany we had 6 weeks), think we look very pale. Still, we are more heat resistant then most. We don’t turn the AC down to 72F, and we still freeze in the malls and go outside to warm up when the toes in flip flops turn blue. We don’t live here despite the temperatures, but because.
